The scholarship is awarded on an alternating basis to a student studying at either Marquette University or the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
A UW-Milwaukee student was awarded the scholarship for the 2020-2021 academic year. The scholarship will be given at a Marquette student during the 2021-2022 academic year.
It will be added to the list of posted scholarships students can apply for, and journalism instructors will be asked to share the announcement with their classes.
The scholarship committee, including the Walker family, has worked with the universities to develop the following criteria:
Qualifying student preferences:
- A declared major in journalism or a closely related field.
- A minimum grade-point average of 3.0.
- A financial need, based on university calculations.
Restrictions on use of the scholarship fund:
Money from the fund shall be used only as an independent scholarship and shall not be tied to an already-funded internship or scholarship. UWM will receive the first scholarship, to be in place for the 2016-17 academic year, and Marquette University will receive the scholarship for the 2017-18 academic year. The universities will continue to alternate years of use.
