Silent Auction Announced:

Update: The silent auction raised $100 for the scholarship fund. Thanks for your support!

To celebrate the one-year anniversary of Don Walker’s induction into the Milwaukee Press Club Media Hall of Fame, an online silent auction has been set up to raise money for the scholarship in his name.

Up for bidding are seven historical newspaper hats from the collection of Michael Juley, who worked for The Milwaukee Journal and Milwaukee Journal Sentinel for 38 years.

The hats include:

  • A “Milwaukee Journal Green Sheet hat” from the late 1970s.
  • A “Milwaukee The Journal hat” from the late 1980s.
  • A “Milwaukee Journal Sentinel hat” from the early 2000s.
  • Three “Journal Sentinel merger hats” in various colors from 1995, the year the two papers merged.
  • A “The Milwaukee Journal hat” that is navy with a tan brim (pictured in photo below).

Suggested opening bid for each hat is $15. Bids may be emailed to Juley at michaeljuley@hotmail.com from Oct. 14 through Oct. 18.

Please write “hat bid” in the subject of your email and specify which hat you are bidding on using the quoted descriptions and specifying a color for the Journal Sentinel merger hats: blue, cream or gold.

Winning bidders will be notified via email and will receive directions on how to make the donation and obtain the hats.

This scholarship honors the legacy of Donald L. Walker, an alumnus of Marquette University and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He was an editor and reporter for the Milwaukee Journal and Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and a founding member of the Milwaukee Newspaper Guild.

Over nearly four decades, Walker covered the issues and events of Milwaukee and beyond with integrity, fairness, wit and compassion. He was a consummate professional who balanced his life with his family, friends, sports, literature and music.

A $2,000 scholarship is awarded annually to local college students studying journalism. The scholarship alternates between the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Marquette University. The first recipient was Jakayla Phillips, a UWM student.

No formal fundraising event for the scholarship fund is currently scheduled, but individual donations continue to be made. You can find tips here on how to organize your own event to raise money for the scholarship fund.
