Jan. 13, 2019 — The Don Walker Memorial Scholarship continues to grow, thanks to donations from our generous supporters.
The fund received $1,775 in donations in December, bringing the total amount raised to more than $70,000.
The Milwaukee Press Club Endowment, the financial steward of the scholarship, has continued to invest the money prudently. These investments ensure the scholarship will continue to support journalism students at Marquette University and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee for years to come.
The scholarship board is continuing to monitor the fund’s progress and to evaluate opportunities to enlarge the annual award or support more students.
The scholarship currently provides $2,000 annually to one student at Marquette University or UW-Milwaukee. Cassandra Danielle Bretl, a senior at UW-Milwaukee, is the third recipient of the Walker scholarship.
This summer, a Marquette University journalism student will be selected to receive the scholarship for the 2019-2020 academic year.
This scholarship honors the legacy of Donald L. Walker, an alumnus of Marquette University and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He was an editor and reporter for the Milwaukee Journal and Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and a founding member of the Milwaukee Newspaper Guild.
Over nearly four decades, Walker covered the issues and events of Milwaukee and beyond with integrity, fairness, wit and compassion. He was a consummate professional who balanced his life with his family, friends, sports, literature and music.
The Don Walker Memorial Scholarship is administered through the MPC Endowment, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit foundation affiliated with the Milwaukee Press Club. The scholarship greatly appreciates the support of its leadership sponsors, including the Milwaukee Newspaper Guild and the Milwaukee Press Club.
