April 27, 2019: Marquette University is in the process of choosing the fourth recipient of the Don Walker Memorial Scholarship.
In the meantime, the three prior scholarship winners are reflecting on how the scholarship has helped them and what comes next.
Jakayla is taking free senior portraits for students in need, Sophie is teaching an after-school Spanish class and Cassandra works with the deaf community.
Those who have generously contributed to the Walker scholarship have supported students who not only have a passion for journalism, but who also have a desire to give back to the community.
The scholarship website will spotlight essays and updates from the prior winners, starting with Jakayla:
Blessings come in many forms. In my case, I lost my brother, and though the wound still hurts, I gained the Don Walker Memorial Scholarship. I gained strength, everlasting support, courage and a new vision.

This scholarship honors the legacy of Donald L. Walker, an alumnus of Marquette University and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He was an editor and reporter for the Milwaukee Journal and Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and a founding member of the Milwaukee Newspaper Guild.
Over nearly four decades, Walker covered the issues and events of Milwaukee and beyond with integrity, fairness, wit and compassion. He was a consummate professional who balanced his life with his family, friends, sports, literature and music.
The Don Walker Memorial Scholarship is administered through the MPC Endowment, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit foundation affiliated with the Milwaukee Press Club. The scholarship greatly appreciates the support of its leadership sponsors, including the Milwaukee Newspaper Guild and the Milwaukee Press Club.
